In elementary school, much of the knowledge that is gained is basic knowledge that will be built upon in higher grades. A good foundation is required in order to be successful in later years. Like other students in Massachusetts, students at John F. Kennedy Elementary School are taught with the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks in mind. These frameworks provide students, teachers and parents with expectations for the knowledge and skills that students should have at the end of each year. For example, in grade 4 mathematics, students focus on mathematical operations in algebra, place value, fractions, measurement and data and geometry. In geometry, students should be able to draw and identify lines and angles, and classify shapes based on their lines and angles. Students also focus on their problem solving skills and learn to use mathematics to model real world situations. For more information on the Mathematics tutoring we offer, please contact us.

Students in middle school are in between elementary and high school. Thoughts of college and university may be far off, but it is never too early to start building a good foundation for learning. It is for that reason that the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks outline standards for students so that they still have the knowledge and skills to be successful at each grade level. In grade 8 mathematics, student work with radicals and integer exponents and also start working on understanding the relationship between lines and linear equations. Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Brockton District Curriculum

The standards for mathematics in grades Pre-K-8 require students to master skills and develop understandings in four domains of mathematics: counting and cardinality, algebraic reasoning and operations, measurement and using data, and geometry. As they progress through each grade of the program, the curriculum stresses the same set of general standards that characterize effective mathematical reasoning. These standards include the ability to think and work through problems with precision, to use abstract and quantitative reasoning, and to develop and assess mathematical arguments.

In grades pre-K to 5, the anchor standards in reading focus on students’ ability to identify key ideas and supporting details, to explain the meanings of words used in the text, and to trace the development of ideas from the beginning to the end of a text. Other standards ensure that students are aware of how the writer’s point of view influences the text, how parts of the text relate to each other, and how to evaluate arguments developed in a text.

Massachusetts Tutors

I believe that each individual has his/her own style of learning, and that it is the responsibility of public education to discover and honor this learning style within the classroom setting. I also believe that all children have a right to a fair and equitable education despite any differences in background or behavior that a child might display.
My patience is one of my best qualities, and if a student doesn’t understand something the first time then I need to find another way to explain the concepts.
After every session, I find it best to ask the student to teach me the material. I believe if the student can explain the material in their own way then they truly understand the material. I believe that it is also best for the student to be working with someone patient. Throughout my tutoring experiences, working with ages 10-60, I have found that there is no one way to tutor/teach.

Chalk Talk: The Importance of Literacy

Reading is one of the highest predictors of academic success. Student who read more naturally become better writers. They improve their fluency in reading; they read faster and with greater comprehension. In studies of the effectiveness of summer reading assignments, researchers have found that students who do not read during the summer fall as much as a year behind students who do read. It doesn’t matter what students read, as long as they read regularly. It also helps to engage children in discussions about their reading. And of course, when children see their parents read, they are motivated to do so as well. Children who see their parents read regularly are far more likely to make reading a life-long passion.
