Wailuku District and Curriculum
The Hawaii State Department of Education (DOE) is the governing body for Wailuku-area schools; both organizations work together to uphold the General Learner Outcomes (GLOs) laid out by the DOE. These GLOs, with their focus on self-directed learning, ethical use of technology, valuable communication, and more, are designed to produce students who can successfully navigate post-high school life — whether this means moving on to higher education or entering the workforce.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Wailuku District Curriculum
To further aid in producing successful students, the DOE and Wailuku-area schools will be updating their curriculum. Instead of following the older No Child Left Behind standards, the DOE is implementing a change to the new Common Core State Standards. Planned changes in the curriculum include a greater focus on the logic behind math, as opposed to students only being expected to perform equations, and a widening of the materials used in Language Arts.
Graduation requirements for Wailuku-area schools will also see an update, beginning with the class of 2016. While students will still be required to pass courses in the same subjects, including Math, English, Science, and Social Studies, the amount of credit and required courses will see a slight change. In English, students will be required to obtain one-half credit hour of Expository Writing, while in math, students must obtain one credit hour each of Algebra and Geometry.

- School Improvement Grant Program Shows Progress - Out of Hawaii’s seven School Improvement Grant (SIG) program schools, five have achieved the status of Adequate Yearly Progress for 2012. These schools were granted the status, in part, for their results on the reading and math portions of the 2012 Hawaii State Assessment.
- New Assistant Superintendent - Following the retirement of Randolph Moore in June 2012, Raymond L'Heureux has been appointed Assistant Superintendent for the Office of School Facilities & Support Services. L’Heureux gained substantial leadership experience during his military career.
- Six Hawaii High Schools Recognized - The Washington Post’s “2012 High School Challenge Index” has acknowledged six public high schools in Hawaii. The schools were chosen for their success in preparing students for post-secondary education.

Students often complain that math is not an important subject to learn; after all, not every career requires workers to perform advanced algebraic equations on a daily basis. Being successful in life, however, requires an understanding of basic mathematic principles. Real-life situations where math is needed include shopping for food or clothes, especially when discounts are offered; buying a car, which requires handling financing; doing taxes; applying for credit cards, which means understanding interest rates; and paying for and financing post-secondary education. While calculators can be helpful in these situations, they can’t tell consumers how to perform the necessary equations. Many careers also call for mathematical ability, especially those in business, accounting, science, or entrepreneurship. Whether for everyday life or working life, students will find math a necessary skill to have.
