The curriculum of the Hickory Public Schools follows the Standard Course of Study, which includes the newly-adopted Common Core State Standards for mathematics (K-12) and English Language Arts (K-12), and the North Carolina Essential Standards for Social Studies and Science. Rigorous programs such as Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) are offered, and challenging curricula in automotive technology, and hospitality are available too.
The Hickory Career & Arts Magnet school offers a standard curriculum that is embellished with career-based academies, offering the opportunity for students to get a head-start on their post-secondary preparations, sometimes even earning a certification related to their chosen career field and possibly even college credits. Chalk Talk: Starting Early: the Key to Finding Your Calling
Starting as high-school freshmen or even younger, students should take “interest inventories” to start discovering their strengths and interests. Many good inventories can be found online, often through a state’s workforce or employment services branch. These surveys allow the user to select skills they have or would like to have, the working conditions they might like (indoors or outdoors, dealing with people or working alone, etc), and the interests they have—reading, taking things apart, creating. A compilation of the answers will result in ideas for careers that encapsulate what opportunities might best fit the survey-taker.
