Chalk Talk: Choosing Educational Apps
As technology becomes more of a staple in the classroom as well as the home, children spend a great amount of time on iPads and android devices. More and more apps are being designed with kids’ needs and interests in mind. How is a parent or teacher to choose the best ones? First, be sure to preview the apps beforehand. All too often, people are disappointed in their app purchase because they sound a lot better in their description than they actually are. Read reviews, as well, to see if people have had any negative or positive experiences with them. Be sure that the app you are buying comes from a trusted, reliable source. Many well-known, established educational and parents groups are creating good apps for kids. Another thing that is important to keep in mind is the child’s stage of cognitive development. Before purchasing an app, ask yourself if the material is something that your child is capable of understanding at the present time, but is not so easy he or she will be bored with it. Apps can be a fun way for children to practice academic and cognitive skills.
