Thomasville District and Curriculum

The districts in Thomasville follow the nationally recognized Common Core Standards and the North Carolina Content Standards. The curriculum has many goals including fostering critical thinking and analysis as well as problem-solving skills. Content is taught so that students grow within each subject during their school years as each subject focuses in on its core topics and builds upon students’ prior knowledge.

We currently cover the following Thomasville-area school districts: Davidson County School System and Thomasville City School System.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Thomasville District Curriculum

Established by the Common Core State Standards, the English/Language Arts curriculum is rigorous throughout both Thomasville City schools and Davidson County schools. Beginning in elementary, the ELA standards focus on reading, writing, listening, and speaking, which of course are skills necessary in all subject areas, and thus support the standards for Math, Science, and Social Studies.

Adopted for implementation in the 2012-2013 school year, the ELA standards and curriculum have an emphasis on information collection, critical reading, and quality research. These skills are absolutely essential due to the “information overload” that is available thanks to the internet and 24-hour TV news channels, smartphones and readily-affordable digital tablets. Further, engaging students in topics relevant to their lives will help them actively seek the knowledge that will best help them as members of society.

Chalk Talk: Be Well-Rounded, But Be Successful

Whether it’s college, the military, or the workforce you’re headed to after graduation, all of these options will probably require an application. Most college admissions officers will tell you that they prefer students whose applications show that they are well-rounded rather than having excelled in only one area; many employers will tell you the same. This advice doesn’t mean that you should take difficult classes and play three musical instruments and get a role in the school theater production and play five sports, while earning an Eagle Scout rank and volunteering at the local hospital. Instead, it means to do more than just one thing, and do them well. Balance academics with extracurriculars, and make community service a priority as well. Choose endeavors that you enjoy, because enjoyment will lead to success in those activities. Quality counts more than quantity.
