Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Espanola District Curriculum
Common Core Curriculum concentrates on Mathematics and English and Language Arts. In English and Language Arts students are expected to learn to read, speak, listen and write using correct English.Students are presented with reading material that is both informational in nature and literature, so that they are prepared for the type of reading that may be required on the job. The same literacy standards required in English and Language Arts coursework are also mandated across other academic and technology classes.
In Mathematics students focus on fewer topics but the required coursework is both rigorous and intensive and includes computation, algebra, geometry, statistics, proportional reasoning, and probability. In both ELA and Mathematics students learn to apply what they have learned to more complex issues, using skills of comprehension and critical analysis and a mastery of core skills.

Keeping Informed: Recent Espanola Educational News
- Summer Learning - Students attending the Tony E. Quintana Elementary School in Espanola were able to attend a four week summer school in July. The district provided bus service for students within the service district and breakfast and lunch. The summer program focused in on core skills including reading, writing and mathematics helping ensure that students will be prepared for the fall semester.
- Academic Success - During the school year, students attending the Tony E. Quintana Elementary School in Espanola participated in a Measures of Academic Progress assessment program. The assessment looked at the skill levels of students from Kindergarten through sixth grade in fundamental school subjects. Those students who showed the most progress were able to be in the running for a $25 Walmart gift card.
- School Field Trip - The entire school from the Hernandez Elementary School in Espanola, New Mexico recently enjoyed a dual school field trip to Albuquerque visiting both the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center and Cliff’s Amusement Park. The trip is an annual school event. Students were able to visit the Center’s permanent exhibit of “Our Land, Our Culture, Our Story,” and then have fun going on rides and water slides.

Chalk Talk: Visit a Virtual Zoo
The National Zoological Park now offers a virtual zoo trip through their live web cams where students and their parents can easily make daily visits to see some of the most popular residents of the zoo. Kids can check in to see how the family of Asian small-clawed otters is doing; watch river fishes from the Amazon such as red-tailed catfish, black pacus live in the 55,000 gallon aquarium at the zoo. If the big cats like cheetahs and leopards are more of a draw, they are available too on the sites webcams. In addition, children can see some of most unusual animals in the world’s animal kingdom such as the Asian fishing cats or the golden lion tamarins. Lions and gorillas are always interesting to watch in this daily theater like exhibit.
