Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Smithfield District Curriculum

The content map for the reading curriculum emphasizes the goals of literature and informational text in the following areas: Key ideas and details, essential questions, assessment, core resources, and craft and structure. At the kindergarten stage, students should be able to relate familiar story lines, identify the characters, setting, and main events of a story or the main idea of an informational text, and ask and answer text-based questions with prompting. By grade five, the students are working with foundational skills such as phonetics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.

Music is offered at the earliest stage of education. Kindergarteners would be expected to master rhythmic chanting and singing the music of diverse cultures. The content standards for music address singing alone and with others, performing with instruments, the composition and arrangement of music, reading music, analyzing musical pieces, and understanding the relationship of music to other genres.

Chalk Talk: How to Organize Coursework

If you change classes during a school day, papers can become quite jumbled in your locker and book bag. One of the easiest ways to organize papers is to assign a folder for each class. You can label the front and back of the folder with a permanent marker. Ideally, you should choose different colors for each class to make them easily discernible. If your textbooks are different colors, you can match the color of the folder to the textbook. If you have the room, you can also dedicate a notebook for each class. If possible, the notebook should coordinate with the textbook and folder colors. If your space is more limited, you can buy colorful divider tabs that are made with adhesive on one side. Divide one or more spiral notebooks into sections and mark them with the tab color that corresponds with class folder. Simply by using folders and adding a bit of color, you can manage your papers with ease.
