Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Narragansett District Curriculum

Reading and writing are an everyday practice at the Narragansett School System. The English Language Arts curricula were written using the principles of Understanding by Design and the Rhode Island PreK-12 Literacy Policy. Each grade level divides study into units that address the accomplishment of one or more of the Common Core State Standards. Elementary students focus on identifying key details, defining the role of author and illustrator, and working on developing good “community building practices.”

Some curricula such as world languages, physical education, and health have been recently revised to include power standards. Power standards are modeled on the work of educational researchers, who set aside certain skills as invaluable to school success and mastery of higher levels of the subject matter. In the realm of foreign language, the school offers French, Spanish, and Italian. An example of a power standard for a world language class is that students should have the knowledge and ability to use the alphabet in the target language.

Chalk Talk: Choosing a Great Password

At school, you may have to provide a password or pin number to log into the computers in the lab, to pay for your lunch, or to access grades or school information from your home computer. The most commonly chosen passcodes are the person’s birthday, “password, and “12345”! A secure passcode should be one that someone would not easily be able to guess from basic information that they may know about you. For instance, instead of your birthday, why not chose the birthday of another close family member? If it is a pin number that you must provide, you can choose the date of a historical event or another set of numbers that you will easily remember. Most websites suggest adding a number or symbol to any word that you may chose. You can add a number to the beginning, middle, or end of a word. The more complex that you make your password, the more secure your personal accounts and information will be.
