Chalk Talk: The Value of Role Play in the Classroom

Many teachers will have students that are learning a new language to role-play. This is a great technique to have students be more aware of their nonverbal cues and to integrate their language with their body movements and facial expressions. When students are actively engaging in dialogue and role-play, they are learning to become more comfortable in expressing themselves. In fact, role-play does much to enhance students' confidence and self-esteem as they try out different situations and imitate certain characters. Students that are encouraged by teachers to plan quickly their skits and then to act out a theme come to understand the value of spontaneity and quick thinking and acting. These useful behaviors help students in the real world to learn interpersonal skills and reasoning. Having students role-play difficult situations help students to understand how to problem solve and to come to an amicable solution in their relationships.
