Latrobe District and Curriculum
The Strategic Plan of the Greater Latrobe School District emphasizes reading/literacy, mathematics, communications, and the sciences. Students follow a Common Core Curriculum that is closely aligned with Pennsylvania State Standards, and that encourages partnerships with local businesses, colleges and universities, and the larger Westmoreland County community.
We currently cover the following Latrobe-area school district: Greater Latrobe School District.
Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Latrobe District Curriculum
The curriculum in reading/literacy/language arts is developmental in nature, from the earliest kindergarten classes to a full program in high school that includes literature and composition. Students are expected to be able to develop skills in writing and speaking throughout their school years. Similarly, the program in mathematics follows specific guidelines that promote results with numerous assessments. Students use the Go Math! Program in elementary school which develops and tests toward Common Core standards in the number system, computation, geometry, and probability.
The district offers many choices for students as they begin to look ahead toward their post-secondary learning and career goals. For example, students in the Allied Health Careers program in high school take a full sequence of courses, as well as internships with Latrobe area medical facilities, in order to prepare for college and university programs in medicine. Students are equipped with skills and an understanding of expectations that provides the necessary basis for higher level work.

Chalk Talk: Why Public Speaking?
Many people list public speaking as their main fear, worse than snakes, heights, or even death. However, public speaking is an important skill that students can develop while they are still in school. It helps focus on main ideas, develop engaging supporting examples, and communicate them with others. In addition, the skills learned in public speaking are an advantage during interviews and while giving presentations in the workplace. It is a skill that if learned early, can grow into a major advantage for a person and they will always appreciate the comfort they have built for public speaking.
