Piscataway Township Schools is a public school district serving over 7,000 students in grades K-12 in Piscataway, New Jersey. The primary goal of the Piscataway Township Schools is to provide each student with an education that will prepare them for post-secondary education, be that in junior college, at a university, in the armed forces or at a trade school. In order to provide students with the best possible foundation for these post-secondary pursuits, the school district challenges them with rigorous curricula in all subjects, but particularly in the areas of language arts literacy and mathematics.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Piscataway District Curriculum
The Language Arts curriculum in Piscataway Township schools has two primary goals. First, students will gain the ability to process, understand and question information in written form. This focus on developing fluent readers means that students will become critical thinkers – a skill that can be used in all aspects of life. Secondly, the curriculum provides students many opportunities to hone their writing skills. Students are taught the various components involved in the writing process, from idea and theme development to punctuation and grammar.
Throughout their education from kindergarten through the 12th grade, students can expect a cohesive curriculum in the language arts. Student learning is facilitated through the use of engaging and interactive lessons and activities that help make connections between classroom learning and real life. By the time students graduate from high school, they have acquired the necessary base for critical thinking, effective and clear communication, problem solving and grade-level reading.

- New Jersey Schools Win National Awhrd - Of the 286 National Blue Ribbon Schools for 2013, fifteen of them are in New Jersey. Private and public schools, as well as vocational schools are eligible for the award. Schools become eligible for the award by receiving a nomination from a high-ranking education official in their state.

Chalk Talk: Language Arts Isn’t Just Reading and Writing
Some people think that learning language arts involves only reading and writing. However, speaking and listening is also involved. While it is of the utmost importance that students learn to communicate effectively in written form, it is of equal importance that students learn how to verbalize their thoughts and actively listen to the thoughts of others. Gone are the days in which English class was nothing more than reading an old book and learning to use proper punctuation. Now, students are gauged on their ability to critically evaluate what they read, formulate those thoughts in writing, and verbalize those thoughts in an effective manner. In that way, students are taught to synthesize the skills they learn in the language arts into a “language toolkit” that will help them put their best foot forward, regardless of whether they are reading, writing, speaking or listening.
