DeKalb District and Curriculum
The DeKalb High School curriculum is based on the Illinois Common Core Standards for Math and English Language Arts and the Next Generation Science Standards and holds as a core value the idea that everyone benefits when education is a top priority. The curricula have a range of goals including the development of key skills and an awareness of the major concepts within each subject; this helps bring about the level of critical thinking required for post-secondary life.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the DeKalb District Curriculum
The mission of District 428 schools is to educate students to reach their potential while preparing them to contribute to a global society, whether they pursue secondary education or enter the workforce immediately following high school. Because the district recognizes the importance of students’ feelings of self-worth, the district fosters a supportive environment that also provides the highest quality education to every student.
At the core of the curriculum are standards for Math and Language Arts that help students develop the key skills in these areas to become critical thinkers and readers, and able to effectively problem solve. These skills are integrated into other subject areas as well, and literacy is also a focus within the Science or Social Studies curricula. Of particular importance is writing and communication in all subjects; students are expected to be able to convey what they know in each subject effectively while using appropriate language for their audience.

Chalk Talk: Recommendation Etiquette
Recommendations are an essential part of a college application, and there are several dos and don’ts to consider. The most recommendations for students are those written by faculty who’ve taught the student recently. To ensure that faculty have ample time to write a good recommendation students cannot wait until the last minute to ask them. Even as much as a week can be too soon of a turnaround for often harried teachers. Students should allow at least two to three weeks, if not longer, before a due-date to ensure a thoughtful, well-written recommendation. The last thing a student wants is a rushed recommendation. Also, to ensure that the recommendation is thorough and specific, talk to the faculty member beforehand and tell them what led you to ask him or her for the recommendation. It would, of course, be bad form to attempt to dictate what a teacher should write, but explaining why you chose them to write the recommendation can be helpful.
