Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Perth Amboy District Curriculum
The Perth Amboy Public Schools adhere to the guidelines set forth for academic performance and achievement in the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards. These standards outline learning benchmarks for students in kindergarten through the 12th grade. Students must demonstrate grade-level achievement in science, social studies, world languages, technology, the arts, health and physical education, and life and careers in the 21st Century.
In Language Arts, students are prepared for careers or college through the use of rigorous, evidence-based standards of learning that are aligned with the expectations of college and the workplace. Students learn to read and write, speak and listen, and communicate effectively not just in their Language Arts classes, but also in their Social Studies and Science classes. This gives students an opportunity to meet the unique challenges by requiring them to work on learning objectives such as integrating knowledge and ideas and identifying key details.

Chalk Talk: The Importance of Community Service
Schools nationwide are beginning to recognize the importance of their students serving their local communities. Increasing community ties through service is an important step to creating a collaborative environment in which community members can help foster growth and development of the city’s youth. Whether it’s cleaning up trash along the highway, volunteering to walk dogs at the local animal shelter or taking time to visit with elderly residents at a nursing home, community service allows students to bridge the gap between what they learn in the bubble of the school environment and applying the knowledge and skills they’ve acquired to help their community. If kids take the initiative to be more active in their community, the community will become more active in their schools.
