McKinney District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

The Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills is the basis for the curriculum at McKinney Schools. Educators take these standards and add their own experience and creativity to create classroom experiences that are meaningful for each student. The curriculum lays out the key targets and benchmarks for student learning and teachers individualize their lessons accordingly. Whenever possible, subjects are taught in an integrated fashion, such as with science, technology and engineering courses, or by establishing mathematic and scientific literacy goals.

We currently cover the following McKinney-area school district: McKinney Independent School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the McKinney District Curriculum

Students are introduced to the world of mathematics by using manipulatives to learn how to sort and group. They then are able to extend this lesson by using the same sets of items to help introduce addition and subtraction. As they progress, students use a number of media and teaching methods to learn how to construct and deconstruct numbers to help them become more fluent in the mathematical processes. In a few years they are able to use items to help them understand fractions, decimals and percents.

The Reading curriculum at McKinney Schools helps students learn to read so they can then use reading to learn. The faculty uses a variety of texts in elementary to help children learn to compare the books they are reading with the world that is around them. They also use favorite stories of the students, such as "The Tale of Despereaux," to help strengthen students' vocabulary and to help show parts of a story. Students learn how to present information in an effective manner as well. Using proper voice, tone, and level of detail, children describe people, places, and events, while also telling a story with adequate details.

Chalk Talk: Seventh and Eighth Grade Writing

By middle school, students have been introduced to many of the basics of writing, so it is not surprising that in seventh and eighth grade the writing expectations are raised. Even though curriculum expectations may vary from state to state, overall these students will spend a portion of their time learning how to write a report to make a point, including having facts to back up their point. They also will learn how to complete a research paper, including editing. This is important as educators are expecting students to find and correct their own grammar, vocabulary and spelling errors. Parents can help by being prepared to answer questions students may have on a topic, but still allow them to create an original work.
