Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Hillsborough Township District Curriculum

The curricula developed in the Hillsborough Township Public Schools are based on two sets of guidelines. The Common Core Standards provide guidance for student learning in the areas of math and language arts. Meanwhile, the New Jersey Core Content Curriculum Standards govern seven other core areas: social studies, technology, visual and performing arts, health and physical education, world languages, 21st Century life and careers, and science.

The purpose of the social studies standards is to provide students with perspective into other peoples and cultures, while preparing them to be active, informed citizens who participate in their local, state, national and global communities. This preparation begins in preschool, where kids engage in projects that teach them collaboration, leadership and responsibility. Students learn about rules and laws, and why they are necessary, and begin to learn the basics of American government and democracy. In middle school, students begin to learn about American history in the context of interactions with other cultures.

Chalk Talk: Why a Good Social Studies Education is Important

In order to be active and informed members of society, students must first undergo a quality social studies education. Social studies is much more than learning about past events; it is an examination of who we are as a people, both in the context of where we’ve been, but also in terms of where we’re going. It is an undertaking in cultural, political, social, economic and religious understanding, where students learn to appreciate and respect the differences among us. It is a case study of civic issues such as immigration, gun control and foreign policy. In short, the social studies allow students to get a sense of who they are individually, but also who we are as a nation in the global context. The skills and knowledge students acquire in their social studies classes help them to be conscientious, engaged members of society who appreciate the diversity around them.
