Algonquin District and Curriculum
The curriculum of the districts is intended to equip students for the future as knowledgeable people who understand and apply a core body of knowledge and skills across the curriculum and take responsibility for their own learning. Students should be capable of reading for comprehension and synthesis, using a variety of techniques, resources, and technology to gather information, and collecting, organizing, analyzing, and retaining information.
We currently cover the following Algonquin-area school districts: District 158 and District 300.
Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Algonquin District Curriculum
Students are taught to use critical and analytical thinking to solve problems and also evaluate and refine strategies for solving problems. The curriculum encourages students to become effective communicators who observe attentively, speak effectively, write clearly and expressively, and demonstrate good listening skills. Students are expected to be collaborative workers who treat themselves and others with respect.
Teachers are encouraged to give students the opportunity to transfer acquired knowledge to life experiences. Students are given the opportunity to demonstrate their commitment to establish, meet, and exceed goals in order to develop pride in themselves and their accomplishments. Students should be responsible individuals who demonstrate ethical behavior, accept responsibility for their actions, and make positive choices for physical and emotional health while remaining socially responsible citizens who demonstrate respect for all.

Keeping Informed: Recent Algonquin Educational News
- Spotlight on Industrial Technology Programs - Harry D. Jacobs High School offers industrial technology programs for students. Recently, students were able to benefit the Eagle Scout Project for the Food Pantry by producing objects for the group.
- Resources for College-Bound Students - The AVID (Advancement via Individual Determination) Program is for students who intend to go to college and want additional supports to help them individually achieve this goal. The requirements for entry into this program are listed on the website.
- Parent-Tot Center - The Parent-Tot Center is a program within District 158 for families of the districts' youngest learners. They host events throughout the year and provide resources to help early learning at home.

Chalk Talk: Common Application Benefits and Drawbacks
For students applying to several colleges, the sheer volume of applications can seem overwhelming. Much of the content of college applications is fairly basic and simple, but having to fill out ten of them can be a lot. The Common Application (common app.) attempts to solve this problem by providing one application that can be sent to several schools simultaneously. There are obvious benefits to this. Students write one major essay and only have to fill our one application, which saves time, and the common app. keeps track of deadlines, which also helps. But not every college accepts the common app. Many state schools don’t, and whereas their applications might be quite short, the common app. is fairly long. These schools also might not require an essay, whereas the common app. does. Also, some colleges require supplements, which can be a couple of extra questions or multiple essays.
