Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Denton District Curriculum
Social Studies is used to show students the connection of the world to their own world. This is done by first connecting to a culture through films, pictures and letters. In sixth grade the students use a curriculum the teacher has named Travel Around the World in 180 days. During this study they learn about various topics, including what causes change. By the time these students have completed high school they will have studied geography and history, economics and government.
Learning to write is started in kindergarten where children learn to form letters and to begin sentences with capital letters. By the fourth grade, they have learned to write in complete sentences, to use proper punctuation and capitalization. This foundation continues to be built onto as students learn how to compose different types of essays. When these students have completed high school, they will have had extensive instruction in the writing process, plus they have had experience in vocabulary development.

Chalk Talk: Supporting Emerging Readers
As children enter the wonderful world of books, there are a few hints for parents to keep these young readers interested in reading. First of all, have books available all the time for the young reader. These books can come from the library, for an inexpensive source. Then sit down with the reader every day for at least 15 minutes. Look at the cover and the illustrations and allow the child to predict what the book, or the next page is about. After reading the book, talk about it with the child. Ask them about the order of events and open your mind and ears for their answers. Most important, do not push a child into reading at a higher level. As long as they are reading books that interest them, the reading skills will progress.
