Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Slidell District Curriculum
The St. Tammany Parish Public School System is implementing the state approved Common Core Curriculum in all of the district’s schools. Common Core provides students with a set of progressive expectations in Language Arts and Mathematics. The curriculum is demanding and set to be aligned with critical thinking and communication goals for workplace and college readiness.
The reading portion of the curriculum aims for students to be introduced to different types of fiction and a variety of non-fiction sources. They are meant to learn interpretative and analytic comprehension strategies as well as be able to evaluate information presented in newspapers, non-fiction texts, and as found online. Students are also expected to write analytic responses to these texts. Other research skills including properly citing sources, avoiding plagiarism, and how to pursue independent research are also taught.
