Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Enterprise District Curriculum

In Mathematics, students in Kindergarten learn numbers and their names and they learn to count object and compare numbers. Students also begin Algebraic skills by adding and subtracting by using physical objects. They begin to learn place values and how to differentiate between objects and count objects in each category. They begin to build a foundation in Geometry by identifying and comparing shapes. In each progressive grade, skills are built on knowledge from previous grade.

In English/Language Arts/Literacy, students begin in Kindergarten by learning how to ask and answer questions about stories and to tell those stories in their own words. They learn to identify the main characters and to match pictures with the stories they have read. Students also learn to be active participants in group reading, showing their understanding of the story. Learning in each progressive grade builds on previous learning.

Chalk Talk: Working with Students Learning English

Connecting with English language learners (ELLs) in a classroom can become a barrier to teaching them effectively. ELLs have different life experiences and speak other languages. Listening to students, showing an interest in what they have to say is the first step. Providing opportunities for ELLs and general classroom student to interact on a personal level gets them using what they are learning. Having a cultural activity in your classrooms that allows students to bring in artifacts from home that relate to their cultures can bring about cross-cultural awareness. For example, on Halloween, you can plan a cultural activity that will allow Hispanic students to share things about their Dia de los Muertos, which is the equivalent to our Halloween and American students can share facts about Halloween with the Hispanic students.
