Having a good understanding of technology and how to use it to meet one’s needs is an important component of the curriculum. Beginning in elementary school, students learn foundational technology skills, including the basic parts and functions of computers and how to access the Internet. Middle school students use technologies like online chat rooms and Skype to connect with other students around the world. Such interactions allow students to gain a better understanding of other perspectives, cultures and languages. High school students focus their studies on the interaction between technology and society and the positive and negative influences technology has on the way people act.

Chalk Talk: The Importance of Community Service

Many schools across the nation require students to undertake a service project of some kind. Some schools undertake service initiatives as a whole, with the entire study body spending a day in the community cleaning up trash, raking leaves, covering up graffiti and the like. Other schools prefer a more individualized approach, in which students undertake projects of their own design. Whatever the case, involving students in service is an excellent way to help them develop a sense of community. Volunteers are in constant need at community organizations such as soup kitchens and animal shelters, and filling that need provides students with a sense of accomplishment. Service also boosts self-esteem, builds feelings of self-worth and provides students with an opportunity to develop new skills or hone skills they already have.
