Educating Our Parents: Understanding the West Milford District Curriculum

The New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards is the primary force behind curriculum development in the West Milford Township Public Schools. This set of core standards has been adopted statewide to ensure that all students receive comparable instruction in the content areas. The Common Core Standards also drive curriculum development in the district and is a set of standards adopted by 45 states to standardize instruction in math and language arts.

The language arts curriculum provides rigorous benchmarks for student learning in the areas of reading, writing, speaking and listening at all grade levels. Students begin acquiring writing skills in kindergarten, where they combine drawing, dictating and writing to express opinions about a book they have read. In later elementary grades, students expand on this skill by learning to write introductory paragraphs with well-supported body paragraphs and a conclusion. Middle school students focus their learning on writing for a particular purpose, such as a persuasive essay, a narrative or a research paper.

Chalk Talk: Tech Skills Every Graduate Needs

Even as the world continues to become more and more technologically advanced, the most in-demand skills that graduates need are very similar to those that graduates needed two decades ago. First and foremost among these skills is typing. Although smartphones provide virtually all the functionalities of a laptop or desktop computer, their use has not improved this generation’s typing skills. Fast and efficient typing is more important now than ever, especially as many college classrooms are full of students typing notes on laptops. Those who hunt and peck are quickly left behind! Another basic skill graduates need to master is e-mail etiquette. Social media use has done nothing to improve teens’ use of proper grammar, spelling, punctuation and the like. But more than that, graduates need to understand the nuances of their voice when they write an e-mail. Coming across as professional and courteous is more difficult than many people think.
