Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Tyler District Curriculum
Mathematics is introduced to children by showing them how one number is assigned to one item when counting. After this is mastered, students begin to see how to combine or take apart sets, to represent adding or subtracting numbers, soon multiplication and division are introduced using other manipulatives. By the time these students graduate high school, they will have been exposed to various advanced mathematics, including algebra, geometry, trigonometry and calculus.
The writing curriculum at Tyler Schools begins with students learning how to form their letters. Educators use a variety of media to help children master this skill. They use flour, sand or even the air. After students learn how to create their letters, then words, sentences, and paragraphs, they begin to learn how to create a work that reflects their own voice, while staying within the theme set forth by the teachers. These students are strong writers when they graduate that can face written assignments in college or their careers.

Chalk Talk: Parent-Teacher Communications
Whether it is a conference or to check on an assignment, parents often need to be able to stay in touch with a teacher. This is easier to do if the teacher knows who a parent is. To help facilitate this make time to meet the teacher early in the year and then stay in touch. When talking with the teacher, do not become too personal with her plus to not blame the teacher for issues. Remember that the teacher is human and that she has the students' best interest at heart. With technology today it is sometimes more convenient to send a text or an email to a teacher, however do not abuse it. Keep this form of communications for class events, homework or reporting absences. If an effort is made to stay in touch with a teacher when there is not an issue it will be easier to talk with them when there is.
