Irmo District and Curriculum
District Five of Lexington and Richland Counties states its mission “is to provide challenging curricula with high expectations for learning that develop productive citizens who can solve problems and contribute to a global society.” In order for this to occur, District Five has adopted the Common Core State Standards in English Language Arts and Math. Other core subjects also have frameworks that detail the major areas of learning and what students are expected to know and be able to do each school year.
We currently cover the following Irmo-area school districts: District Five of Lexington and Richland Counties.
Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Irmo District Curriculum
Math classes have a narrower focus in the Common Core than in the past. Student practice fewer standards in a given year, but master them with greater depth. Instead of practicing ten concepts for 3 weeks each and then having to relearn them year after year, this method focuses on only 5 or 6 concepts in the school year so students are able to have a firm grasp of the processes and retain them over the long term. This allows students in high school to be prepared for full year courses in algebra and geometry.
In their English Language Arts courses, students begin reading a variety of texts in their earliest classes. Starting in kindergarten, students practice skills in synthesizing non-fiction and literature, as well as, different types of writing. They learn how to write for creative and reflective purposes, and are later taught informational, persuasive and analytic writing. Teaching students how to organize and support their ideas in writing is also an emphasis.

Chalk Talk: Magnet Schools
The purpose of magnet schools is to provide families with choices about education while still being part of the public school system. Unlike the typical neighborhood school which one attends based on the boundary, a magnet school can be attended by any student who lives within the district regardless of their neighborhood. As a result, magnet schools tend to see greater diversity than a neighborhood school. Magnet schools usually have a drawing factor which is a focus for the school. For example, magnet schools might receive extra funding through private and government grants to offer extra courses in fine arts, technology, environmental studies, and the like. There are many types of magnet schools, so if your child has a particular interest or career goal, it is a good idea to see what magnets your district offers.
