Chalk Talk: The Benefits of Community Service
Developing community ties through service projects is an important way to build a collaborative relationship between schools and communities. Schoolchildren can benefit the community in a variety of ways, from volunteering their time at homeless shelters to helping deliver Thanksgiving meals to the elderly to cleaning up local parks. These community-based learning experiences allow students to utilize the knowledge and skills they acquire in the classroom in real-life situations. By improving the community in which they live, students become excellent ambassadors and make it more likely that the community will support school projects and events. If kids take the initiative to be more active in their community, the community will become more active in their schools.
