Lexington District and Curriculum

Lexington School District One is “where caring people, academics, the arts and athletics connect.” The district’s goal is to help their graduates to be ready to become leaders in the 21st century. In order to accomplish this goal, Lexington One has implemented the Common Core State Standards in Math and English Language Arts for all students in kindergarten through 12th grade.

We currently cover the following Lexington-area school district: Lexington School District One.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Lexington District Curriculum

The Common Core Math Standards invite students to change the pace and depth of their learning to increase their understanding and retention of math concepts. Students practice a given concept for a longer amount of time than they did with the previous standards. The focus is on in-depth learning of fewer ideas rather than on introducing the same ideas year after year. This process requires that students master the information and store it over a longer time so they are able to use in high school and beyond.

English Language Arts classes consist of acquiring skills that students will use in all content areas, as well as, in their post-secondary studies and future careers. They practice reading skills, and also learn how to write successfully. Writing is taught so that students understand how to address different audiences and organize their ideas in writing. The Common Core combines a variety of texts so that students have the ability to synthesize all types of writing.

Chalk Talk: Learning Styles

There are many different ways people in which people learn, the most common ways are visual, auditory, kinesthetic. Visual learners remember things better when they have something to look at. For example, they need to see a map in order to know where they are going. Auditory learners remember things they hear best, so if they are headed to a new place, they do best when someone gives them verbal directions. Kinesthetic learners use processes and action to remember things. Taking the example of finding a new location, a kinesthetic learner may need a map or verbal directions to get there, however, they will not remember it until they have actually traveled the distance. Figuring out how your child learns best can help them master concepts more quickly. You can help them use their learning style to solve math problems, study for tests, and more.
