Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Pharr District Curriculum
The reading curriculum at Pharr Schools begins with teaching the students the basics of reading, such as reading from left to right and how to hold a book. Students soon soar through the reading experience by learning the different types or books and the authors' viewpoints in the books. By middle school, for students that may be struggling, they introduce READ180 to help these students raise their reading skills. In high school, students go more in depth by studying different genres from different angles.
Pharr Schools help students succeed in science by starting with the familiar world around them as they look at seasons, or the life cycle of an animal. As they advance, students look at why we have seasons, weather and they study each area of an animal. Some of the discovery that is done on the animals takes place in junior high when students dissect a frog. Through high school students learn the impact that animals and weather have on the earth and the impact that people make on the weather and on animal life.

Chalk Talk: Separation Anxiety
The first day of kindergarten is a time of excitement for children, while it is a time when parents feel frazzled and worried. Unfortunately, these anxious feelings are then transferred to the child. There are some things that a parent can do to prepare for the day. First of all, check out the school to make sure that it is a place that both the parent and child will be comfortable with. Then, prepare a countdown calendar. This can be done weeks ahead. Either a mark can be placed through each day or a page with the date can be torn off. Next, go shopping with the child to pick out clothing or other supplies. Arrange a playdate for other students that will be in the same class. Lastly, meet the teacher and answer any questions that the child may have. These steps can help ease the worries of both child and parent.
