Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Flower Mound District Curriculum

The science curriculum at Flower Mound Schools begin with what the students can experience without diving into a topic too far. They learn about clouds in kindergarten by asking themselves what they can teach them and the effects of general in areas of their lives, such as the clothing they wear. Through the next years they advance to where they may talk about natural and man-made resources and learn their differences.

The students begin learning reading, through the curriculum offered at Flower Mound, on the first day of school. Soon they begin to learn about the difference between fiction and non-fiction, including why they have pictures, captions and labels. By fourth grade students begin to use literature to explore different genres. They read "Yeh-Shen The Chinese Cinderella" to help understand drama as they read and act out the story. Chalk Talk: The Third Grade Child

Third grade is considered a transitional stage for children. This is the year when they begin to have more homework, and they are still growing up. While children are in third grade they begin to understand the different processes that are needed to solve a problem. They also are able to understand symbols, such as an addition sign, and what it represents. Students also may come up with creative solutions to a problem, yet they can tell the logic that is behind it. They also can compare two items and tell the difference in size or quantity, by looking. Finally, children this age start to become less egocentric. They begin to realize that they are not the center of the world. It is important to keep in mind that these are just guidelines of what to expect from children of this age, however, each child will change and mature at their own rate.
