Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Kinnelon District Curriculum
Faculty, staff, students, parents and community members are all involved in the process of evaluating district curricula and ensuring they are properly developed and aligned to state and national standards. The Common Core State Standards and the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards provide a framework for curriculum development. They established benchmarks for student learning in all core subjects that students take.
The language arts curriculum includes a comprehensive education in learning to write effectively. Students in elementary school acquire basic writing skills, such as how to write opinion pieces and write facts about a topic. Middle school students focus on developing skills for different types of writing, such as narratives, explanatory essays and persuasive pieces. In high school, students build on the foundational skills they gained in elementary and middle school to develop advanced writing skills. Students learn how to support their opinions with substantive facts, link major sections of text with appropriate transitions, and organize complex ideas.
