Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Gardner District Curriculum

The elementary curriculum places special emphasis on reading and math skills. Both are taught so that students begin to see how they are related to other lessons or topics, and their real-world relevancy is also stressed. Students are taught how to read a wide range of texts from stories to poems to newspapers. They also begin to acquire research and library skills and learn how to understand the purpose behind different types of texts. In Math, a similar approach of introducing students to concepts from numeracy to patterns to shape recognition and spatial awareness, helps students gain many problem-solving strategies.

In high school, the coursework becomes much more focused and students take full year courses in specialized topics within each subject. High school students may enroll in Advanced Placement and utilize the College Now and Quickstep Programs to obtain college credit from local colleges. Career readiness courses are offered in business and marketing, family and consumer science, industrial technology, and media/web design.

Chalk Talk: Building the Home-School Partnership

Communication about what is going on in the classroom is vital to establishing and maintaining a positive working relationship between teachers and parents. Send home letters, notes, and newsletters with your students frequently to communicate the curricular topics you are addressing in class so parents can easily assist and reinforce what children are learning in school. Maintain a website with class details and deadlines and email parents, as frequently as possible, about current projects, student progress, or issues. Though technology and written correspondence are important, an individual phone call home to a parent goes a long way to developing that positive relationship as well. It expresses to parents just how important their child’s progress is to you when you take the time to reach out on a more personal level. Additionally, it is important to remember to express positive behaviors to parents in all of your communications as it makes a big difference if there is ever a problem or issue. When you keep the door of communication open, children will experience increased success through a team approach to their learning.
