Siloam Springs District and Curriculum
Siloam Springs is located in the rapidly growing northwestern portion of Arkansas. The district is well-known around the country for its Siloam Springs High School Scholarship Program, which was created about three decades ago. Since its inception, the scholarship has provided applicants with a total of $5.2 million to cover college expenses. Today, every student who applies is virtually guaranteed to receive some degree of financial assistance.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Siloam Springs District Curriculum
On its website, the district posted information clarifying what the Common Core Standards are and what they are not. Although the standards are being incorporated nationwide, they were not developed by the federal government but by the individual states. Furthermore, the federal government does not require states to implement the standards in their instruction. They cover math and English language arts; however, they also connect these subject areas with others.
The school district has implemented the Common Core Standards and explains how they have impacted both literacy and math. In literacy, the standards list specific texts that students will read in school and require that they read more of a variety of materials; additionally, other subject areas—science, social studies, and technology—have been integrated into the literacy standards. In math, students have fewer standards to meet, but the goal is for them to gain a deeper understanding of the content.

- An Honor for an Outstanding Early Childhood Educator - A Pre-K teacher at Siloam Springs was named one of the two Outstanding Early Childhood Professionals of Arkansas for 2013. Arkansas’s Division of Child Care and Early Childhood Education selects the teachers—nominated by fellow educators and administrators involved with early childhood education—who receive this honor. In order to earn this award, finalists must submit their personal teaching philosophies and work that demonstrates their impact on students.
- Another Award for a Siloam Springs Educator - A teacher at Main Street Academy was named the Alternative Learning Educator (ALE) of 2013. This is quite an honor, as there are 400 ALE programs across the state of Arkansas. The teacher attended a conference in Hot Springs, but she did not know that would be receiving this award beforehand. At the conference, she was surrounded by all of her colleagues, who gave her a standing ovation.
- High School Swim Coach Wears Many Swim Caps - The Siloam Springs High School swimming coach of 13 years is now teaching a swimming wellness class at the local John Brown University. The course is not only designed to discuss the physical, athletic aspects of the sport—as she does with her team—but to instruct swimmers as to how to prepare for accidents or other incidents in the pool and connect with swimming on emotional and spiritual levels. The coach visits John Brown often, as her team holds their home meets and practices at the university’s pool complex. In the high school, she also teaches special education, geometry, and algebra.

Chalk Talk: Having Fun to Learn to Read
Parents of struggling readers often ask what they can do at home to help their children improve their reading skills. Struggling readers are frequently reluctant readers as well, so it can be difficult to motivate them to read and practice reading skills—especially outside of the classroom. However, parents may not realize that they can play fun games with their children so that they can work on their reading skills, and very young children may not even be aware that this is occurring. Some of their favorite, familiar games may be transformed, and many games and their components can be made and require no financial commitment. Two areas in particular in which games can help are phonological processing and vocabulary (sight word recognition, especially). One example is checkers: Parent can write words on pieces of paper or plastic and place them on each square, and the player must recite the word when he or she lands on it. There are many ideas available on the Internet for parents to explore.
