Bryant District and Curriculum
The Bryant Public Schools make up a large school district that is comprised of ten schools and over 7,500 students. Within the district, there are seven elementary schools that begin with pre-K or kindergarten and end with fifth grade, a school that holds grades 1-8, a middle school with grades 6-8, and a high school. The district’s mission is to motivate and challenge students to learn and to do so on a lifelong basis, provide a nurturing environment for them to do so in, work with students’ families and the community, and diversify and individualize instruction.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Bryant District Curriculum
Bryant Public Schools use the Common Core Standards and will begin implementing the PARCC assessment during the 2014-15 school year. The district was eager to integrate these standards because it wants its students to be well-prepared for college and their careers and to be able to compete with people all around the world in the workforce. The website also states that it is confident that both its educators and students will excel under the new standards.
The district has created a website that is entirely dedicated to the Common Core Standards and is very informative for parents and students. Each grade level has a “pacing guide” that details what students will learn during each portion of the school year for both math and literacy. There are also yearly plans for literacy and math for all grade levels. Finally, the website contains many links and resources for both parents and teachers.

- Bryant Students Take Flight - This school year, Bryant introduced a new Hornet Engineering’s Aerospace Engineering course for students interested in aviation. Recently, the students in the course had the opportunity to go on the ultimate field trip to the Central Flying Service in Little Rock. Each student was able to spend an hour in a light aircraft. The students received instruction from the professionals at CFS, were able to go on a tour, and tried their hand at flight simulation. This course is offered as a part of the Hornet Engineering's Project “Lead The Way” curriculum.
- Superintendent Greatly Impacts Schools and the Community - The superintendent of Bryant Public Schools believes that great schools lead to a great community that surrounds them. Now, the man who heads a school district with an excellent reputation is being honored for his work in the Bryant community as a whole. He was named the Man of the Year by the Bryant Chamber of Commerce.
- Art Students Celebrate Their County’s Past - The Bryant High School Art Club has created a mural, which many drivers pass each day, that is an ode to the Saline County’s history and growth. The mural’s first phase represents the country’s past, displaying the county’s once vast Native American population, a train to show the area’s famous railroad stop, and mining equipment to depict that it is a well-known producer of bauxite. Over 30 students have worked on the mural and are in the process of creating the second phase, which focuses on the area’s present and future.

Chalk Talk: Can E-books Make the Difference?
In today’s digital age, more and more children of increasingly younger ages are becoming less and less interested in reading. As a part of the technology boom, e-readers such as Kindles and Nooks are being used more frequently. E-books offer several advantages over their traditional print counterparts: They are typically less expensive, they usually do not require Internet access, they can be downloaded almost instantly, and Kindle and Nook apps can be installed on iPads and other tablets for free. Today’s children often covet and thrive with technology, so giving them the opportunity to use e-books may increase their motivation to read. E-books offer a variety of interactive features—highlighting, audio, music, etc.—that can engage young readers. They may not be the only answer to solving the reading motivation problem—other factors such as student choice, interest, and appropriate reading levels must be taken into consideration as well—but they are an option that should certainly be explored with reluctant readers.
