Orangetown District and Curriculum
The Orangetown School District‘s comprehensive educational program provides students with the 21st Century skills of collaboration, communication, critical thinking and creativity in a problem based learning environment. Problem based learning begins with a question and integrates multiple areas of the curriculum (e.g. reading, writing, math and science) into engaging activities throughout the project that helps students reach conclusions and answer the question. Problem based learning activities are student centered and help students learn through problem solving.
We currently cover the following Orangetown-area school districts: Nanuet Public Schools, Nyack Public Schools, Pearl River School District, and South Orangetown Central School District.
Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Orangetown District Curriculum
The district’s standards are aligned to the New York State P-12 Common Core Learning Standards. The revised standards provide more concrete learning, focus on what students use in life and help them prepare for success in college or the workforce. The English Language Arts standards include the knowledge and proficiency needed in the areas of reading, writing, speaking and listening and language.
The Common Core Math Standards incorporate two kinds of standards: how students are able to apply and use math principles (content) and what students know about math (practice). These two instructional strategies are linked together to promote skill mastery. Students in the early grades build a strong foundation in understanding whole numbers, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, fractions and decimals. These skills and concepts become more complex at each grade level and help prepare students for algebra and geometry in the higher grades.

Keeping Informed: Recent Orangetown Educational News
- Local Music Events - The Orangetown Community Band presented their annual Youth Concert at Cottage Lane Elementary for the fourteenth consecutive year. Over 100 musicians from different generations played alongside Cottage Lane’s 5th grade band. Band members included community musicians, Orangetown district staff, advanced district students and professionals from the area that currently or formerly played with major orchestras in the New York area. Also included in the band were a father and his 5th grade son who both played the French Horn and a string quartet.
- Community Outreach - Over 50 members of the Blauvelt Lions Leo Club at Tappan Zee High School brightened the lives of homeless New Yorkers this holiday season. In December, students served food and delivered toiletries, clothing, Christmas and holiday cheer to a homeless shelter in New York City. They also volunteered at Soup Angel n Nyack serving dinner, desert and washing dishes for over 60 members of the community. The Leos also made holiday cards filled with good wishes. The club donated 200 hours of service to their community during the holiday season!
- Science Learning - Third graders in Mrs. Eckert’s class at Tappan Zee Elementary were recently visited by Amy Sabin of the Community Outreach Department of United Water. Her visit was part of their science unit on the water cycle. The visit included interactive and engaging activities. First, Ms. Sabin read students a book about the water cycle. Then the class was separated into groups of two or three students and given a pipe cleaner. Stations were set up around the classroom. Each station had a container filled with a specific color bead and a picture that represented different parts of the water cycle, such as a plant, earth, glacier or ocean. At each station was a cube which each student rolled that directed them to the next station in their water cycle. At the end of the activity a group discussion helped the children realize they each had created their own unique water cycle. To create a lasting memory of this wonderful learning experience, students then twisted their pipe cleaner into a bracelet

Today’s world is filled with social media and numerous sources of technology. Often, kids are more familiar with all the “apps” than adults. That is why it is important for every adult to educate themselves about the latest on-line threats such as cyberbullying so that you may talk to your child about being a responsible digital citizen. This conversation should start as soon as your child begins using the internet. Use age-appropriate filtering, blocking and monitoring software on all laptops, desktops, wireless phones and video games used by your child. Be aware of who your child is talking to on-line. Know the websites your child is visiting and limit the time they spend on-line. Explain to your child that no personal information such as their name, address, birthdate, school etc. should be given out when they are on-line, and they should never post information about their location. Tell your child never to meet someone they met on-line in person and should let you know immediately if someone on-line asks to meet them. Following these tips, will help keep your child safe when using the internet.
