Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Georgetown District Curriculum

In the elementary school, at Georgetown Schools, the students are introduced to literature in many ways. When they first enter school, the teachers read books to the students that are based on weekly themes. This continues while students are shown different strategies to help them become more fluent. Some of the lessons they encounter include using six words to write a memoir, or to use SOAPStone, (Speaker, Occasion, Audience, Purpose, Subject, Tone) to help them understand poetry.

The science curriculum at Georgetown Schools begins by exploring the basics of the students’ world. They explore topics such as weather by creating a weather map by following fronts, windspeed, storms and other information on daily weather maps. They then create Venn diagrams showing cold and warm fronts and how they affect weather. In high school, they can expand on this knowledge by studying earth science, or other sciences to help students feel more a part of the world that they live in.

Chalk Talk: Fifth Grade Mathematics

Fifth grade mathematics may vary from state to state but generally this is the age-level that is preparing for middle school. In this year students begin to understand the language of math, plus they are able to demonstrate understanding of numbers up to the millions and decimals to the thousandths place. They also begin to learn about prime numbers, plus use range, mean, mode and median to share data. These and much more help make the leap from fifth grade to middle school a little easier. With the increasing use of technology, math at this level is also becoming more interactive and students can see the applicability of math in their computer use and in solving increasingly difficult challenges.
