Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Huntsville District Curriculum
Mathematics at Huntsville School begins with children using manipulatives to learn how to count by assigning numbers to each item in a set. Soon children begin to combine sets and taking away items to learn how to add and subtract. Continuing to use manipulatives students are guided through more advanced math, including algebraic equations. Students learn that there are a variety of ways to solve problems they may face in their lives.
Social Studies is introduced to students through the discussion of rules that are used in the home and the classroom. Students and teachers discuss the need for these rules to keep the members of each place safe. They are then introduced to the rules, or laws of the community and the government body that creates these laws. Before long, students realize that each group of people around the world has rules that help them to be productive and safe. They then realize that this is just one way in which each person has something in common with another.

- University Interscholastic League - The University Interscholastic League brings competition to students in the literary and academic fields. The material that the students acquire to help prepare for the competitions work hand-in-hand with their academic curriculum. It also helps them to understand important issues and master skills.
- Performing Arts - The Theatre and Drama department introduces students to the steps required to prepare a production for the stage. Students can learn how to act, help manage backstage, be an understudy and more. This group also performs at UIL competitions.
- National Honor Society - The National Honor Society is made up of students that have showed excellence academically, in leadership skills, service and character. After being inducted, students then commit to keeping up these characteristics including service to the school and the community.

Chalk Talk: Third Grade Writing
By third grade most students have become fluent when printing, but they still are working on skills when it comes to cursive writing. In most states, this is the year that they work on this skill. To aid in this, students will be doing quite a bit of writing. During this year students will learn how to write to inform and to persuade. They also learn how to use adjectives to help bring their writing to life. Writing stories and other creative fiction is also a component of the curriculum and used to help develop a range of literacy goals such as word development, understanding parts of speech, and organizing ideas. Common spelling rules, spelling types and compound sentences also are used to help students become better in both creating the letters and creating ideas.
