Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Duncanville District Curriculum
The reading curriculum at Duncanville Schools begins with children learning all types of strategies. First they learn how to hold books and to read from left to right and from the top to the bottom. Soon they learn how to look at the consonants of a word, or to break the word into syllables, to help them understand words and decode them. They also memorize sight words that they recognize upon seeing them. The words begin with one or two letters and move up to multiple-syllabic words. By the time students graduate they will have strategies that will assist them in any reading they come across.
The social studies curriculum helps the student understand how cultures and settlements develop over time. They learn about the different people who make up the history of Texas. They also learn how people around the world choose where they live. Some people settle due to topographical features or due to trading routes. All of the students are given the tools to see how people around the world are connected.

- Duncanville Band - Duncanville Band is organized for students who have a love of instrumental music and want to improve with their chosen instrument. Through this band’s history they have been one of a few schools worldwide that have been awarded the Sudler Shield of Honor and the Sudler Flag of Honor. There awards place them as one of the outstanding marching bands and as a nationally exemplary band program.
- FFA Organization - FFA helps build on skills of students in the agricultural program of the school. Students who participate can become biologists, veterinarians, or horticulturalists, to name just a few of the fields. The FFA also has goals each year that the organization, as a whole, helps to fulfill. One of these was to help to feed the world, starting at home.
- University Interscholastic League - The University Interscholastic League is designed to allow students to improve in areas of strength. The students meet with educators to guide them in the areas of improvement. Students participate at competitions at their local area. After this students may be eligible to advance to district, regional or state meets. Students can become eligible for scholarships.

Parents need to take the excitement that comes home with their children and help it to grow.
