Chalk Talk: The Importance of Reading

Parents often ask how I can motivate my child to read. Educational experts seem to agree that reading to your frequently may help to inspire a love of reading. The following recommendations may also help your child become an eager reader. Begin something that your child really wants to read. Even a comic, joke book or sports magazine can boost literacy skills. Sometimes e-books downloaded on a favorite smartphone or tablet can motivate the most reluctant reader to read. Read and re-read. Even if it’s the same book, children love and learn through repetition. This can help them read more easily and with confidence. Reading aloud provides “together time” and helps children build their vocabularies. Create opportunities throughout the day for reading and writing –read signs in the supermarket, write notes, letters, e-mails or text messages. On road trips play word games. If you are worried, don’t hesitate to ask your child’s teacher or doctor to recommend additional resources to help your child develop a love of reading.
