Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Mission Bend District Curriculum

The students at Mission Bend begin to learn aspects of reading from the first grades in school. The students begin by learning the difference between fiction, non-fiction and poetry in kindergarten. They also learn to use their own background knowledge to make connections with the reading. The reading material begins to be complex by middle school as they read classics and contemporary fiction. The fluency and comprehension skills continue to grow through high school as they learn different terms while reading various selections from world literature.

The Social Studies curriculum introduces the students to the basics of patriotism, historical figures, and national landmarks in elementary school. When they enter middle school they expand their knowledge by studying the contemporary world and the influence of individuals and groups on history and events. In high school, in Geography, students then learn about interactions of land, people and climates on culture so they come away from high school with conceptual understanding of how systems interact.

Depending on the curriculum set forth by the state, math expectations may vary but over all students come out of third grade being able to add and subtract large numbers, to round numbers so they can make an estimation and with the knowledge of using measurement tools to find the area and perimeters of squares and rectangles. Along with other outcomes students also begin to understand probability, statistics, various graphs and tables.
