Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Texarkana District Curriculum
The Mathematics curriculum at Texarkana Schools begins with teaching students number sense. This is done through the students learning to recognize and to draw numbers. Soon they are learning to assign numbers to items as they count. Number sense continues to grow in importance as students learn their mathematics facts and then progress on to High School where they use it in understanding how to work with geometric proofs or linear equations in algebra.
The Writing Curriculum is part of Language Arts. In this students learn how to create letters, words, sentences and paragraph. They also learn how to create reports and use this skill in other ways as they write poetry, fiction and non-fiction. Students develop research skills that include recognizing point of view and ways to evaluate information. As they continue their writing development, they will be able to craft ideas in different forms such as informational, persuasive or analytic.

- Business Professionals of America - The Business Professionals of America was developed to help business education students develop and extend their skills. This group also participates in service projects throughout the community and their school.
- Debate Club - The Debate Club is for students of high ethical standards that are interested in competing at UIL events. Students improve their skills in policy debate, Lincoln-Douglass debate and others. To be a member, students have to have either taken or be currently enrolled in Debate I.
- Fellowship of Christian Athletes - The Fellowship of Christian Athletes is made of students that take part in the inter-school sports programs. These students can either be participants or spectators. They help students get ready for challenges they may face through active participation in school life by modeling behaviors for others.

Chalk Talk: First Grade Writing
The writing adventure begins in first grade. Curriculums may vary from state to state buy generally this is the year that students begin to check their writing to make sure that it expresses meaning, and to see if there are any revisions to make. They learn to make choices in their language and punctuation that is used. These students come out of first grade with skills they will build on for the rest of their lives. They are able to create rudimentary stories and, of course, can also illustrate them or make short picture books. It’s exciting for a child this age to have creative control, and this is a great way to combine fun with the development of strong literacy skills.
