The Colony Schools help students face challenges by creating a curriculum around the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills which leads to profound learning. There is an emphasis on critical thinking, and it is essentially developed by accessing past knowledge through reflection, which helps provide the frame of reference necessary for analysis, problem-solving and other critical thought. Another key goal of instruction is to find points of integration between subject areas so that students can see how the relevancy in what they are learning.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding The Colony District Curriculum
Grammar is a part of the Language Arts curriculum at The Colony Schools. Students go from learning how to create sentences with capital letters and to end with the proper punctuation, to recognizing and using prepositions and prepositional phrases. As they continue, they uncover secrets to creating a well-constructed sentence. This leads them to be able to write in a wider variety of styles later, such as persuasive or expository, and to also understand how to organize and present ideas in writing.
The Science curriculum at The Colony Schools includes the study of matter. Students learn about the properties of matter in kindergarten and first grade. Within a few years they find out how forces have an effect on matter. This study is continued as they learn about the different form of energy as they create conversion gizmos and energy transformation gizmos. By including hands-on activities, demonstrations and lectures students are able to see how cause and effect impact the phenomenon they are studying.

Chalk Talk: Fifth Grade Social Life
Around the fifth grade, students begin to take more of an interest in other students than they do themselves. Unfortunately, this is not always done in the nicest way. This is usually the time when gossiping and teasing takes the foreground and can cause problems in the classroom and at home. This action is a method to gain popularity. Unfortunately, this means that others are being victimized. Parents can help in this area by keeping the lines of communication open with the child and, whether the child is dishing out the words or is the recipient, let them know they can talk with you and that certain behavior is not to be allowed, either at school or at home. This is one of the many developmental milestones that we all go through!
