Educating Our Parents: Understanding the La Porte District Curriculum

The Reading curriculum takes students from the basics to reading novels by the time they graduate. Kindergarten students learn that by blending the sounds together, they are able to read words and make sense from the books that they read. They also learn about the different genres and some strategies to help them decode words they do not understand. In high school they can complete novel studies as they learn about literature from around the world and that was created within different cultural atmospheres.

The Social Studies curriculum at La Porte Schools covers a many different areas. Students learn about the cultures and histories of different civilization. They learn what factors helped people decide to settle in the area and the steps that led to these cultures developing the governments they did. Students take the knowledge that they gain and make displays to educate the community as to the information that they have gained. This gives student a sense of how to use their voice within the community and how to craft and disseminate ideas.

Chalk Talk: Signs of Bullying

Generally, bullying is seen as any type of imbalance of power. This can take physical, verbal or non-verbal form. Regardless of the form, there is a victim. There are signs if a child is being bullied. If they come home with tears, or damage to some of their possessions, or if they have cuts or bruises that they did not have earlier, they may have become a victim. This can also be the case if they do not have very many, or any friends, or if they take a long path to or from school, or if they seem fearful. They may also seem moody, depressed or cry unrepentantly. They also may have physical ailments. If they appear with any of these talk with them to see what the cause may be. After it has been confirmed, the school needs to be notified. This allows them to give other steps that may need to be taken, if bullying has occurred.
