Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Socorro District Curriculum
Students learn about writing throughout elementary so when they enter middle and high school they learn how to apply these skills for many applications. Students learn how to fill out applications, including the use of correct grammar and complete sentences. They also learn how to write a paragraph so they are able to fill out college or job applications with ease. In addition, student can take their writing skills and use them in journalism classes. By learning how to apply their writing skills throughout life students develop the skills necessary to address different audiences persuasively.
The science curriculum at Socorro Schools includes the study of the solar system. Throughout their time at this schools students learn about the characteristics of the planets of this solar system. They then continue with this education by learning about the other items that are found in the sky. When they get into high school they watch video shot by probes that have traveled through space, plus they study star cycles and requirements for traveling in space.

- Teatristas - Teatristas is the theatre group at Socorro High School. Students who enjoy acting or helping with the production of plays are welcome to become a part of this organization. This is a place for students to take their unlimited imagination and create dreams.
- Fire Science Technology - The Fire Science Technology courses show students the skills and knowledge that are needed to prepare for a career in this area and introduces them to cutting-edge scientific techniques in this science. Included in these classes are physical agility, studies for CPR, OSHA requirements and regulations, and other technical courses.
- The Robotics Club - This group combines the talents and skills of students that enjoy science, technology, engineering and math, combine them with teamwork and dedication, and create a robotic item that can compete against other schools. At competition, the machine must be able to complete specific tasks. Students have the opportunity to advance to state, national and international levels.

A common problem that faces parents is a wall that makes communication with their child very difficult. With a few suggestions, the wall may come down a little at a time. High school children need to receive positive affirmation. This means that when a parent says no, it can change the way a child feels about himself and his world. Try to find ways to change situations around so that the teenager won’t feel a negative connotation. Criticism can have the same effect as saying no. Once again, try to turn the phrases that are used into options or positive phrases. Family meeting can also help with two-way communication. Guidelines and agenda items need to be agreed upon up front and meetings should always end in a positive manner. With these couple of suggestions parents and teens may find that communication with each other a joy.
