Canton District and Curriculum
Canton City Schools are a part of Cherokee County School District. The curriculum follows Common Core State Standards, which includes a set of student performance standards at every grade level in preparing students for what they need to know and be able to do to move to the next grade level and be successful in the future. These are aligned to statewide assessments in core subjects and help teachers understand the strengths and weaknesses of individual students. The district also provides enrichment services for interested students and as students move into high school they also have a wider variety of electives from which to choose.

Chalk Talk: Learning Can Be Interesting
Some children and teens don’t like school. They have grown up and gone through grades but still don’t like school, the idea of school and certainly not the work that comes with it. This lack of interest can cause behavior issues in the classroom and poor grades. How can we change that low level of interest? Teachers try to make lessons fun, interesting and related to students’ lives. Parents can do the same, for all subjects. Ask your child to share with you what he or she doesn’t like about school and what about school he or she does like. Build on that. Use their words as you work with them on homework, focusing on what is liked and how that work can relate to what they like. For instance, many children and teens aren’t interested in history. However, all students like to play and be with their friends. As your child is doing a Social Studies or Civics assignment, ask your child how his or her friends would react in that specific situation. Your child could eventually begin to associate less-interesting topics to what they really like or like to do, imagining that concept as it would be today, in their world. The more students can apply what they learn in school to their everyday lives, the more interested they’ll be.
