Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Fairmont District Curriculum
The Common Core is being implemented rigorously in Marion County Schools. Math is a special area of focus. The Common Core addresses not only content but also the thinking processes students need to learn in order to master the content. The idea is to focus on fewer standards but ensure students develop a range of complex problem-solving skills in each. Operational sense, algebraic thinking, geometric and spatial awareness, and the ability to analyze, manipulate, and model with quantitative data are main goals of the curriculum.
Marion County Schools offers a wide variety of courses at the high school level. A much higher percentage of Marion students are enrolled in Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate programs than the state level percentages. These programs provide students with college level or internationally based learning standards. This shows that Marion County Schools prepares students for success whether students are planning to attend college or pursue employment after graduation.

- U.S. News Ranks High Schools - Marion County Schools contains three high schools. Of the three, two were ranked well by the U.S. News annual report on high schools. Fairmont High School was ranked third in the state and East Fairmont High School was ranked seventh. This is a great accomplishment.
- Focus on Technology Extends to Sidewalk Repair - Not only does Marion County talk about technology integration in the classroom. They use it in every area of their operations...including in sidewalk repair. A new system that uses an injected foam saves time and money in sidewalk repair.
- Reorganizing Classes and Schools - Marion County Board of Education discussed the possibility of moving fourth graders up to a middle school environment. The benefits would include more rigorous academics for the students. Others question the developmentally appropriateness of the move.

If students are completing the same old book reports that they have completed for decades, except that now they are typed and include little animations, something is wrong. If students are communicating with classrooms across the globe, working to solve a water shortage, something is right. This is the power of technology and students should have access to courses on web development, programming, or coding. If schools harness students' curiosity and earnestness and give them the opportunity to truly change the world.
