Mercer County Public Schools is implementing the Common Core Standards. The Common Core Standards have been adopted by most states across the country. Their focus is depth over breadth within the subjects of Math and Language Arts. The focus is on building both knowledge and critical thinking skills so that students can master any learning challenge they encounter in their college academics or career.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Bluefield District Curriculum
This focus on thinking skills serves students well as they move into the 21st century career field. Many jobs that student swill possess have not even been invented yet. Therefore, the thinking skills to imagine, problem solve, and innovate will be essential moving forward. The ability to analyze problems and determine the best or most efficient solution is one of the key goals of the curriculum. Students are also encouraged to work in collaborative groups and develop both the ability to work with others and to work independently.
Language Arts and Math underpin much of the learning that students do and both subjects are taught so that students are able to apply what they learn to other subjects. Reading is taught to encompass the type of non-fiction texts students read in social studies and science, and mathematic problem-solving strategies are drawn upon in many of the science and technology classes offered. Students ability to communicate their thinking in each subject is also an overarching goal of the curriculum.

Chalk Talk: How to Choose a College: The Location
When students picture their college career, they often think of the social scene. This is with good reason. There is much to benefit from the college experience: the people, the amenities, the experiences. However, students should consider their past experiences when choosing the location for their college. If a student has rarely been out of his or her area, going to a college far from home, even a couple of hours away, might be a shock to the system. If a student has traveled frequently, especially without their family, they may be better prepared for attending a college even out of state. Students also need to consider whether they want an urban, suburban or rural learning environment. While students look forward to the new experience of college, they need to consider their past experiences. Going to a college in the wrong location can lead to academic distress. This is definitely an important aspect to college decision-making that students should think about.
