Union City District and Curriculum
Union City students attend Fulton County Schools. The curriculum follows Common Core Georgia Performance Standards where teaching and learning are guided by a set of standards at each grade level. Math and Language Arts are emphasized and integrated into other subjects. Science, Social Studies and technical education include the literacy standards as well. The framework allows students to develop skills at a pace appropriate for their grade level while preparing them for college and career readiness.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Union City District Curriculum
Mathematics learning in grades K-5 emphasizes the application of numbers and operations, geometry, data analysis and probability, algebra, measurement and process standards. English Language Arts focuses on reading and language development. Written expression, use of language and rules of conventions are emphasized in guiding students to the necessary level of comprehension for future grade levels.
English Language Arts in middle and high school grades focus on the comprehension of more challenging books and articles, using analysis, inference, and claims to identify relevant evidence from the texts. Emphasis is placed on reading for information in addition to advancing the skills of writing, language, speaking and listening. Middle school Math is centered on the concepts of ratios and proportional relationships, the number system, expressions and equations, functions, geometry, and probability in preparation for the more advanced high school mathematics concepts of quantity, algebra, functions, statistics and probability.

- Etris Community Center Activities - Union City opening day of baseball is here! The annual event, this year on April 5th, will be at Etris Community Center. Beginning with a Health Parade, the day is devoted to children and teens ages 3 to 14 in the community Baseball Program being healthy and active. A Banner Contest is held for teams to create and enter a banner that best represents themselves; the team with the best banner wins! The First Pitch, thrown by the Union City Mayor officially begins the season. Time to play ball!!
- Family Recreational Opportunities - A number of parks and recreational activities are within the Union City community. Visit Mayors Park to stroll on the walking track and have a picnic. Ronald Bridges Park holds youth athletic programs and offers a nature trail, basketball courts, a playground and pavilions. Etris Community Center houses a functioning multi-purpose room, furnished and with a kitchen, perfect for parties up to 120 people. Outside is a spacious yard for children and teens to play and wander around. Visit one of these parks for a great day outdoors!
- Union City Annual Easter Egg Hunt - Make sure to include the Union City Annual Easter Egg Hunt as part of your Easter holiday. Held every year by the Union City Parks and Recreation Department, this is the perfect event for children 10 and younger. Music, food, games and prizes, face painting, inflatables and most importantly, pictures with the Easter Bunny. This year the Easter Egg Hunt is held on April 19th, from 10am to 1pm. Don’t forget your Easter baskets!

Chalk Talk: Reading More
Some students love to read, others don’t even like picking up a book. Even with technology in the classroom, textbooks and novel reading is still a part of student learning at every grade level. In the classroom, students are required to read from a book out loud, independently, as part of a group or share what they learned from doing so. At home, even if part of a student’s homework, some will try to hold off as long as possible before picking up a book. To help these students, one solution may be to read when they do. For younger children, setting aside a time for both of you to read can show your student you are going to make the effort too. For older students, finding a solution may be tougher. A similar approach as with younger students or requiring at home what is required in the classroom could work. However you choose to get your child to read more, guide them to understand books can provide information, dreams and “down-time” just as much as technology can.
