Taunton District and Curriculum

Taunton Public Schools is a large district comprised of 11 schools and nearly 8,000 students. There are seven elementary schools, three middle schools, and one high school. Also within the district are a preschool, alternative high school, extended day program, and a virtual school. Learning is supported by Common Core Curriculum Standards and the Massachusetts Frameworks that cover subjects other than Math and Language Arts. These are standards and objectives driven frameworks that describe the types of knowledge and skills that each student should develop in order to be proficient in the subject.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Taunton District Curriculum

The Common Core is a curriculum framework that details skills in key topics of Math and Language Arts and deepens student knowledge in each during their school years. Math covers the topics of numeracy, operational sense, algebra, geometry and measurement, and data analysis. In Language Arts, reading, writing, communication, and research are major focuses with skills such as vocabulary acquisition and language development weaving through each strand of the framework.

English Language Arts at Taunton High School requires students to meet high expectations, read during the summer months, and analyze and evaluate texts. Friedman Middle School imbeds character education into the curriculum, teaching students to and recognizing those who put forth their best effort, come to class on time and prepared, and complete their homework. The district offers courses in business and industrial technology, visual arts, and junior-level R.O.T.C.

Participants also had the opportunity to vote for their favorite book on the list.
  • Elementary Students Read, Too! - Chamberlain Elementary’s reading specialist emphasized the importance of students reading over the summer and how this is even more of a challenge with the wealth of technology children have available to them today. At the end of the 2012-13 school year, each student received three new or slightly used books that they chose from a list to take home with them. Eighty-eight percent of the students read at least one of the books, while 47 percent read three or more. Students who turned in reports for the books they read over the summer received awards.
  • Students Involved in PARCC Assessment Pilot Program - Taunton’s superintendent recently reported that the PARCC assessment pilot program, which was being instituted at one elementary, middle, and high school, has been going smoothly. The PARCC assessment will eventually replace the standardized state assessment and has been lauded for its role in preparing students for college and their careers by emphasizing skills other than rote memorization and multiple choice test-taking. High school students who have taken the assessment have praised it.

Chalk Talk: Modelling a Love of Reading and Writing

It can be very difficult to get children to enjoy reading and writing, but teachers should start by modelling their own love for reading and writing. Instead of grading papers during silent reading times, teachers can read a book at their desk. They should ask students about what they are reading but also talk about what they are reading themselves. Teachers often dread teaching writing; it is subjective, so it can be difficult to grade. Plus, writing is a difficult skill, so they may not be confident writers themselves. However, if they portray a negative or unsure attitude towards writing, they cannot expect their students to be enthusiastic about it either. When assigning writing tasks or implementing a writer’s workshop, teachers should share their own writing samples. They can even write their own children’s book and put it in the classroom library; the students will surely want to read a book authored by their teacher!
