Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Carmel District Curriculum

Students in Carmel’s English Language arts classes encounter a wide variety of physical and digital fiction and non-fiction texts. Through working with such texts students learn to research, think critically, and discern useful information from information that is not useful. Student use these skills to engage with texts that builds knowledge and expand their understanding of the world.

Students in Carmel’s math classes learn to tackle real world problems and get real results. They do this by first gaining a deep understanding of core mathematics concepts and the rules that guide mathematics in books and in the world. Students begin developing this understanding in the earliest grades and build on it grade-by-grade until they have the mathematics knowledge they need to be successful in college and careers. Instruction in all other classes is based on the New York State Learning Standards that the state adopted in 1996.

Chalk Talk: Selective Discussion

Sometimes getting children to talk about their day at school can be like pulling teeth, and then other times it seems like children won’t stop talking bout their days. When listening to children talk about their day at school it is import to not only hear what they are saying, but to also hear what they are not saying. If a child consistently gushes about his or her great day, but only seems to be talking about one class there might be a problem. Think about what the child is not talking about and ask questions about that subject. This will help you better understand your child and make you aware of school-related problems that he or she might being trying to hide. By fostering discussion, and creating an environment that is accepting of the challenge’s which your child faces, your child will benefit immensely in terms of their conflict management skills and ability to relate with others in critical matters.
