Penfield District and Curriculum
The town of Penfield, New York, is located within the Penfield Central School District, which also includes parts of Monroe and Macedon counties. The district is comprised of four elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school. Together, these schools serve 4,600 students. The curricula in classes such as music, social studies, and science are based on the New York State Learning Standards. Penfield schools’ English Language Arts and math curricula are based on the New York State P-12 Common Core Learning Standards.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Penfield District Curriculum
Penfield’s English Language Arts curriculum seeks to develop students that are prepared to take their places as citizens of the world in the 21st Century. English Language Arts instruction focuses not only on reading and writing, but also on speaking, listening, and language skills. The curriculum also teaches literacy in subjects such as social studies, technology, and science and the schools offer students a wide range of career-oriented classes and instruction that are designed to prepare students for their college and careers goals.
Penfield’s math curriculum is designed to develop students who have a firm grasp of the most important core mathematics concepts, and who can apply their knowledge of those concepts to real world problems. Students are introduced to the core concepts in the earliest grades, and then go on to gain a broader understanding of those concepts and how to apply those concepts as they move up grade-by-grade.

Keeping Informed: Recent Penfield Educational News
- School Newspaper Receives Honors - The American Scholastic Press Association (ASPA) has recognized Penfield High School’s newspaper, The Pendulum. The ASPA awarded The Pendulum with an award for First Place with Special Merit in the group’s annual awards for school newspapers.
- National Merit Scholarship - Two Penfield High School seniors will compete for National Merit Scholarships. The students participated in the National Merit Scholarship qualifying exam along with 1.5 million other students last year. They both have now been named among the 16,000 semifinalists who will go on to compete for one of 8,000 scholarships.
- Fire Prevention Essay Contest - The winner of Scribner Elementary’s Fire Prevention Essay Contest has been announced. The Scribner 5th grader, was honored with an Outstanding award for his fire prevention essay. The award presentation included a visit to Scribner by local firefighters.

Chalk Talk: Beyond the Three R's
Traditionally, educators have spoken of the “Three Rs,” or reading, writing, and arithmetic, but in a changing world, traditions much change, too. The demands of today’s schools and workplaces are far too complex to be served by a curriculum that does not includes science, technology, and the arts in its core classes. As schools are likely to continue to continue focusing on the “Three Rs”—the subjects that appear most often on statewide tests—parents will have to pick up the slack. Parents should teach children how to really use technology for learning, not just use it to play games. They should help children understand the science that is happening around them all the time. Finally, parents should encourage exploring the arts, and remind children that creativity doesn’t just happen on pieces of paper and museum walls. Creativity is a part of everything they do and every problem they solve.
