Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Riverhead District Curriculum

Instruction in Riverhead’s English Language Arts classrooms is based on a set of internationally benchmarked standards that were adopted by the state in 2011. These standards set forth a challenging and rewarding curriculum. Students are expected to engage with a wide variety of fiction and non-fiction texts. Beyond merely reading texts, students learn how to critique texts, use texts to develop a better understanding of the world, and clearly communicate ideas from texts.

Instruction in Riverhead’s math classrooms is also based on a set of internationally benchmarked standards. Students in the earliest grades are introduced to core mathematics concepts in numercay, patterning, and geometry that will guide their mathematics education through high school and into college and careers. At each grade-level students further refine their understanding of the core concepts and the ways in which they can use information from those concepts to solve real world problems.

Chalk Talk: Legibility

In many people’s minds handwriting is no longer an important part of education. After all, if today’s students write at all, they do it on computers or tablets. They punch keys, but never touch paper. That would be fine if it were true, but it simply is not. Education technology is not so widely available that every student in the U.S. has his or her own computer or tablet. Students are still taking notes, writing stories, and doing worksheets the old-fashioned way, with pencils and paper. As such, it is important that students be encouraged to work on and improve their handwriting. Taking the same idea a step farther, working on fundamentals of literacy that speak to overall clarity, translates in areas like precision in brief, electronic communications. It helps kids understand that their words are important and they should put time and effort into the presentation of their words.
