East Fishkill District and Curriculum
The students of the town of East Fishkill are served by four school districts. These school districts are Arlington Central School District, Carmel Central School District, Pawling Central School District, and Wappingers Central School District. East Fishkill schools offer English Language Arts and math classes that are based on state developed and Common Core Learning Standards. Schools’ classes in subject area such as science, health, and art are based on the New York State Learning Standards.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the East Fishkill District Curriculum
East Fishkill’s math curriculum is based on standards that are designed to develop in students’ a deep understanding of core mathematics concepts such as numeration, abstract reasoning, problem modeling, and problem solving. For example, in fourth grade, learners use or write mathematical statements, drawings and equation symbols to solve multiplication and division word problems. They also solve equations having unknown numbers to represent multistep word problems. The standards introduce students to these concepts in the earliest grades and further develop students’ knowledge of the concepts in subsequent grades.
East Fishkill’s English Language Arts curriculum is based on standards that are designed to develop students who possess literacy skills that can be applied to all subject areas. The standards require students to read widely in fiction and non-fiction texts, and to research and critique the texts they read, and to and clearly communicate their ideas about those texts.

Keeping Informed: Recent East Fishkill Educational News
- Community Support for the Schools - Two local gas stations will take part in an ongoing “Gasoline for Arlington Education” event. Going forward, the Freedom Plains Road Exxon and Innis Avenue Shell will donate to Arlington Central School District school five cents from every gallon of gas purchased at the stations on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays.
- Best Communities for Music Education - The National Association of Music Merchants has named the the Carmel Central School District among the Best Communities for Music Education in the United States. To celebrate the honor the CCSD held a special student concert that featured Carmel students.
- District Budget News - Citizens of the Pawling Central School District voted to pass the district’s budget for the next school year. The budget includes funds that will go towards instructional services, property and building maintenance, technology implementation, and curriculum alignment.

Today’s schools have proven themselves to be adept at producing readers, but they have fallen behind in developing reading’s partner skill, writing. Though schools focus on things like spelling, penmanship, and grammar, they rarely get deep into true communication skills. Developing theses skills is something that parents can do easily. Parents should encourage children to communicate their thoughts clearly and to clarify things that are hard to understand. Whether it is creative, reflective, or persuasive type writing, it can teach children a lot about how to craft writing, and the rules of grammar and language, which are always best learned in context. Also, when reading books with their children parents can draw children’s attention to the methods authors use to get thoughts and meanings across to readers. This will not only make children think more about how others communicate, but also make them think about how they communicate.
